The Plugin Hunt Theme is simply Product Hunt for WordPress. It gives you in just a few clicks a website just like Product Hunt. The only challenge is adding the content and acquiring users of your website. Something made super easy with all the sharing controls and simple Social Logins available with the theme.
The Plugin Hunt Theme is an amazing theme. Full Stop. It’s way more than just a theme to be honest. If you want to ‘clone product hunt’ then this theme is for you. Sure, it may not always keep up pace with the developments in the product hunt website but for a stand-alone WordPress them starting at 80 bucks it’s amazing value.
The theme is simple to install, at first use you’re asked for an API license key which comes with your download. Next you need to install the required plugins (especially the wpeddit plugin which controls the voting information) and then you’re ready to roll.
Then it’s onto the settings to customise the colour scheme and other options. There’s no welcome wizard but the options are typically where you’d expect for a WordPress theme. In the themes we’ve seen there’s generally a mix of people using the new customiser (good for color changes) or themes having their own options page (like the plugin hunt theme) we don’t mind either way but find that when options get complex and lots of options (like changing layouts etc) that a stand alone options panel is the way to go.
There’s a ton of options sitting behind the Plugin Hunt Theme. Take a look at the options panel below. Plenty to customise here and plenty of options to work through.
The options in the theme grow all the time, at the time of writing we are looking at v4.0 but since that release there’s been tons of additions. Most notably the compatibility with WooCommerce. The theme lets you control
- The logo and menus
- The new post form messages
- The layout (classic or boxed)
- Mailchimp integrations
- All the color schemes
- The style of the blog (different logo and tagline)
- Any Custom CSS
- Google analytics options
It’s a stand-alone system but the Pro and Ultimate editions come with an epic integrations plugin. This let’s you create a ‘set it and forget it’ website that auto-populates with content. A great idea if you want to batch up websites with the primary aim of new content and affiliation. Brilliant.
It’s (from v4.3.2) now compatible with WooCommerce which makes it a really powerful solution for selling your products and having the key products rise to the top as your visitors upvote them and comment on them.
There’s quite a lot to work through with this theme, but it’s all needed. For example, out of the box you may wonder why the front-end post form doesn’t let new subscribers post content. Well that’s because it’s designed that way. As admin you can control who can post content (subscribers can ask to be contributors or authors (authors can upload media to your website). As we always say in these reviews, technical is fine as long as it’s backed up with good documentation. This theme certainly has that.
As we said in an earlier review, we are big fans of plugins or themes which have been documented using revaxarts documentizer and that’s the chosen documentation tool for the Plugin Hunt Theme. It’s a well documented theme and you should have no issues with setting it up.
[EDIT] the team at epic plugins have since moved all their documentation to a central location here. Making it even easier.
Product Hunt in a box.. . wow. It’s totally cool and by far the coolest theme we’ve reviewed so far (OK, so it’s the first theme we’ve reviewed but it’s definitely a strong out of the box offering). You can quickly start your very own curated content site and start gathering users.
The theme is not affiliated with Product Hunt so it is expected that in some areas it may not have all the features (e.g. ‘Ask Me Anything’ is planned to be available as an add on for a number of the Epic Themes from talking with the team), expect this in 2016.
